NYC lawmakers, advocates call for better e-bike battery regulations

Lawmakers are looking for a way to better regulate dangerous e-bike batteries without punishing thousands of New York City delivery workers who rely on the devices to get around town.

“This is a complicated issue,” Councilwoman Gale Brewer (D-Manhattan) said before a City Council hearing on ways to make the batteries safer in the wake of a string of fires connected to the devices. “We have 65,000 fabulous delivery workers, and every single day they are supporting New Yorkers delivering food. The issue is to make sure they’re safe.”
